PM Surya Ghar
About this infrastructure programme
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana pays most of the cost of putting solar panels on a household’s own roof, then lets the household keep the power — 300 units of free electricity every month, enough to cover a large share of an average home’s usage. Launched in 2024, the scheme runs through pmsuryaghar.gov.in: a household registers with its electricity consumer number, confirms it has shadow-free rooftop space, and picks a registered installer once technical feasibility is cleared. The subsidy, up to ₹78,000 depending on system size, is credited after installation and net-metering are complete, and it’s a one-time benefit per household — meant to make rooftop solar cheap enough that the free monthly units, not a future resale, are the real payoff.
